On This Day: June 3, 1989 – Rock On by Michael Damian Hits Number One
On this day June 3, 1989, Rock On by Michael Damian reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming the top song in America for the week of June 3 through June 9. The track, a cover of the 1973 original by David Essex, was featured on the soundtrack for the film Dream a Little Dream and gave Damian his biggest hit as a recording artist.

The song also reached number one in Canada and became a radio staple during the summer of 1989. With its moody bassline and slick 80s production, Rock On gave new life to a classic tune and introduced it to a whole new generation.

Michael Damian, already known to many for his role on the soap opera The Young and the Restless, found crossover success with this single, which remains his most well known musical achievement.

80s insight: Rock On was part of the late 80s wave of revitalizing 70s hits with modern production. It reflected a growing nostalgia within pop music, as the decade wound down and artists began reworking older songs to fit the glossy sound of the era.
