On This Day: June 21, 1985 – Return to Oz Brings a Darker Vision to Theaters
On this day June 21, 1985, Return to Oz premiered in theaters. Directed by Walter Murch in his directorial debut, the film served as a darker and more unsettling continuation of the classic Wizard of Oz story. Based on L Frank Baum’s later Oz novels, the film introduced a new generation to Dorothy, played by Fairuza Balk, as she returns to a ruined Emerald City and encounters terrifying new villains like Princess Mombi and the Wheelers.

Despite its striking visuals and loyalty to the tone of Baum’s original books, Return to Oz struggled at the box office. With a budget of 28 million dollars, it earned only 11.1 million in returns. However, the film has since developed a strong cult following for its eerie atmosphere, imaginative effects, and haunting take on childhood fantasy.

80s insight: Return to Oz showed that 80s fantasy films were not afraid to take bold risks, even when revisiting beloved classics. Its legacy lives on as one of the decade’s most unique and misunderstood cinematic efforts.
