On This Day: June 1, 1984 – Star Trek III: The Search for Spock Premieres in Theaters
On this day June 1, 1984, Star Trek III: The Search for Spock premiered in theaters across the United States. Directed by Leonard Nimoy, the film picked up where Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan left off, as Admiral Kirk and his crew risk everything to recover the body and spirit of Spock.

The film starred William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, James Doohan, George Takei, Walter Koenig, Nichelle Nichols, Merritt Butrick, Robin Curtis, and Christopher Lloyd as the villainous Klingon Commander Kruge. The Search for Spock continued the emotional depth of its predecessor while deepening the mythology of the Vulcan people and the concept of katra, or living spirit.

Fun fact: This film marked Leonard Nimoy’s directorial debut in the Star Trek franchise, a role he would reprise in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home.
