On This Day: February 27 1989 Oranges & Lemons by XTC Was Released
On this day February 27 1989 XTC released their eleventh studio album Oranges & Lemons. The album showcased a vibrant psychedelic pop sound, influenced by 1960s psych rock, and became one of the band’s most commercially successful releases. It reached number 44 on the US Billboard 200, marking one of their highest charting albums in America.

Oranges & Lemons featured some of XTC’s most well known tracks, including Mayor of Simpleton which became a minor hit on MTV and alternative radio as well as King for a Day and The Loving. The album’s intricate arrangements, layered harmonies and colorful production helped cement it as a standout in XTC’s discography.

Despite its bright and playful sound, the album’s lyrics tackled themes of politics, relationships, and personal struggles, blending social commentary with surreal imagery. Produced by Paul Fox Oranges & Lemons also marked XTC’s continued departure from live performances, as the band had stopped touring after frontman Andy Partridge developed severe stage fright in the early 80s.

Fun fact: The album’s psychedelic cover art, created by artist George Hardie was inspired by The Beatles’ Yellow Submarine aesthetic, reinforcing the album’s 60s influences.

Trivia question: XTC’s Mayor of Simpleton became one of their biggest US hits. Can you name the 1982 XTC song that also gained popularity and featured a strong anti war message?
