On This Day: February 23 1983 Subterranean Jungle by Ramones Was Released
On this day February 23 1983 Subterranean Jungle the seventh studio album by the Ramones was released. The album saw the band trying to return to their punk roots while incorporating a more radio friendly sound. While it did not achieve major commercial success it still reached number 83 on the US Billboard 200 and remains a fan favorite.

Subterranean Jungle featured a mix of original songs and covers including Time Has Come Today by The Chambers Brothers and Little Bit O Soul by The Music Explosion. The album had a more polished production compared to their earlier raw sound but still maintained their signature energy and attitude. Tracks like Psycho Therapy and Outsider became standout moments showcasing the band’s rebellious spirit and catchy songwriting.

Despite internal band tensions at the time and drummer Marky Ramone being replaced by Richie Ramone shortly after the album’s release Subterranean Jungle helped keep the Ramones relevant during the early 80s when punk was evolving into new wave and hardcore styles.

Fun fact: The music video for Psycho Therapy was banned from MTV because of its violent and chaotic imagery which only added to the song’s underground appeal.

Trivia question: The Ramones are considered pioneers of punk rock but they were also influenced by earlier rock and roll groups. Can you name a 60s band that heavily influenced their sound?
