On This Day: February 16, 1989 The Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle Released in Japan
On this day, February 16, 1989, The Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle was released in Japan for the Famicom under the title Roger Rabbit. This puzzle-platformer, developed by Kemco, would later be released in North America and Europe for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) and Game Boy, becoming a well-known title among classic gamers.

In The Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle, players controlled Bugs Bunny as he navigated through multiple levels filled with enemies, collecting carrots while avoiding well-known Looney Tunes villains like Sylvester, Yosemite Sam, and Wile E. Coyote. Unlike traditional platformers of the time, the game did not allow jumping, requiring players to use strategy and timing to navigate the obstacles.

The game’s origins are unique. Its Japanese version featured Roger Rabbit as the main character, but due to licensing issues, the Western release swapped in Bugs Bunny. This led to an interesting history where different regions received versions of the game with entirely different characters.

Fun fact: The Crazy Castle series continued beyond this game, with sequels starring different cartoon characters, including Mickey Mouse and Woody Woodpecker.

Trivia question: What was the first Looney Tunes character to star in a console video game before The Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle?
