On This Day: April 8, 1988 - Bad Dreams Premiered in Theaters
On this day April 8, 1988, the psychological horror film Bad Dreams premiered in theaters, adding a chilling new entry to the decade’s wave of mind bending thrillers. Directed by Andrew Fleming, the movie starred Jennifer Rubin, Bruce Abbott, E. G. Daily, Harris Yulin, and Richard Lynch in a twisted story that blended cult terror with supernatural suspense.

The plot followed Cynthia, the sole survivor of a cult mass suicide, who wakes from a 13 year coma only to be haunted by terrifying visions. As she undergoes therapy in a psychiatric hospital, other patients begin dying under mysterious circumstances, and she starts to believe the cult leader may still be controlling her from beyond the grave. Made on a budget of 4.5 million dollars, Bad Dreams earned 9.8 million at the box office and gained attention for its eerie atmosphere and striking visuals. It was often compared to A Nightmare on Elm Street, thanks in part to Jennifer Rubin’s previous role in the Elm Street franchise.

Fun fact: Jennifer Rubin also played a key role in A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, leading many horror fans to link the two films.

Trivia question: What cult horror series had Jennifer Rubin appeared in before starring in Bad Dreams?
