On this day April 29 1985, Freddie Mercury released his first and only solo studio album Mr. Bad Guy. Known for his incredible voice and larger than life stage presence with Queen, Mercury took a bold step into a more pop and disco influenced sound with this project.
Mr. Bad Guy peaked at number 159 on the US Billboard 200 but performed much better in the UK reaching number 6. The album showed a different side of Mercury with tracks that mixed upbeat dance rhythms and emotional ballads highlighting his musical versatility outside of Queen.
Although it did not achieve major success at the time of its release, Mr. Bad Guy has been re evaluated over the years and is now appreciated as an important part of Mercury’s legacy.
Fun fact: Some material from Mr. Bad Guy was later reworked by Queen after Mercury’s death and used in the 1995 album Made in Heaven.
