On this day April 29 1981, Van Halen released their fourth studio album Fair Warning. Known for its darker and heavier tone compared to their earlier party rock anthems, the album showcased a more aggressive side of the band both musically and lyrically.
Fair Warning climbed to number 5 on the Billboard 200 and produced fan favorites like Unchained and Mean Street. Eddie Van Halen’s guitar work was particularly fierce on this record with some of his most creative riffs and solos. Although it did not generate as many radio hits as their previous albums it later became a cult favorite among hardcore fans.
Many consider Fair Warning to be one of Van Halen’s most underrated albums with its raw edge and fearless attitude.
Fun fact: The album’s cover artwork features a portion of a painting called The Maze by artist William Kurelek which depicts scenes of mental illness and struggle fitting the album’s darker mood.
