On This Day: April 28, 1989 - Miss Firecracker Opens in Theaters
On April 28, 1989, the comedy drama Miss Firecracker debuted in theaters. Directed by Thomas Schlamme, the film starred Holly Hunter as Carnelle Scott, a young woman determined to win the local beauty pageant in a small Mississippi town to transform her reputation and her future.

The movie featured a strong supporting cast including Mary Steenburgen, Tim Robbins, Alfre Woodard, and Scott Glenn. Despite its heartfelt story and talented lineup, Miss Firecracker struggled commercially, earning only 1.8 million dollars at the box office against a production budget of 4 million dollars. Over time, it has earned appreciation for its charming portrayal of Southern life and personal redemption.

Fun fact: Holly Hunter had already gained major acclaim with Raising Arizona and would go on to win an Academy Award for The Piano just a few years after Miss Firecracker.
