On This Day: April 23, 1989 - Teen Witch Premiered in Theaters
On this day April 23, 1989, the teen fantasy comedy Teen Witch premiered in theaters. Directed by Dorian Walker and starring Robyn Lively, Zelda Rubinstein, and Carol Kaye, the film followed a high school girl who discovers she is a witch on the verge of her sixteenth birthday and suddenly gains magical powers.

Teen Witch was meant to be a female led version of Teen Wolf, mixing coming of age romance, school drama, and a sprinkle of supernatural fun. Despite a budget of 2.5 million dollars, the film made just over 27 thousand at the box office. It was a flop on release but later found a second life through cable TV and home video. Teen Witch became a cult favorite thanks to its cheesy charm, feel good message, and a now legendary rap scene that fans either love or laugh at.

Fun fact: The infamous Top That rap scene almost did not make it into the final cut of the movie because producers were unsure how it would come across.

Trivia question: What scene from Teen Witch became an unexpected cult hit due to its awkward rap and cringeworthy dance moves?
