On This Day: April 22, 1983 – Stern Magazine Claimed the Hitler Diaries Were Discovered
On this day April 22, 1983, the German magazine Stern made headlines worldwide by claiming it had obtained Adolf Hitler’s personal diaries. The magazine reported that the volumes were discovered in wreckage from a plane crash in East Germany and had been secretly smuggled to the West.

The announcement caused a media frenzy, with major outlets and historians initially taking interest in the supposed insight these writings offered into Hitler’s private thoughts. The diaries were said to contain personal reflections, political observations, and emotional accounts of key moments during World War II.

But just two weeks later, on May 6, the truth came out — the diaries were confirmed to be elaborate forgeries. The scandal embarrassed the publishing world, damaged reputations, and became one of the most infamous cases of literary fraud in the 20th century.

Fun fact: British historian Hugh Trevor Roper originally vouched for the diaries’ authenticity, but later admitted he was misled by falsified evidence and pressured timelines.

Trivia question: What British historian initially authenticated the forged Hitler Diaries before publicly retracting his support?
