On This Day: April 21, 1989 - Red Scorpion Premiered in Theaters
On this day April 21, 1989, the action film Red Scorpion premiered in theaters. Directed by Joseph Zito, the movie starred Dolph Lundgren as a Soviet Spetsnaz operative sent to infiltrate and eliminate an anti communist resistance in Africa. Things take a turn when he begins to question his orders and ultimately switches sides.

Co starring M Emmet Walsh, the film blended explosive action with Cold War themes, delivering big stunts and intense battle scenes typical of late 80s action flicks. While it only made 4.2 million dollars at the box office, Red Scorpion developed a cult following thanks to Lundgren’s tough guy role and its politically charged storyline. The movie became a staple in video rental stores and late night cable lineups throughout the early 90s.

Fun fact: Red Scorpion was filmed on location in Namibia during a time of political unrest, which caused significant challenges for the production team.

Trivia question: What 1989 action film starred Dolph Lundgren as a Soviet operative who turns against his mission in Africa?
