On This Day: April 17, 1986 – Atlantis no Nazo Released for the Famicom
On this day April 17, 1986, Atlantis no Nazo (The Mystery of Atlantis) was released for the Famicom in Japan. This challenging side-scrolling platformer was developed and published by Sunsoft and stood out for its non-linear level design and cryptic gameplay style.

The player controls an adventurer named Wynn, who sets out to rescue his mentor from the mysterious ruins of Atlantis. The game features 100 zones, but here’s the twist many of them are hidden, and levels don’t progress in a straight line. Players must throw bombs, navigate treacherous terrain, and discover secret warps to find the correct path.

While Atlantis no Nazo was never released outside of Japan during the 80s, it gained a following among import gamers for its difficult, exploratory nature and is remembered as an early example of nonlinear platforming design.

Fun fact: The game was originally considered for a Western release under the title Super Pitfall II, but it was eventually canceled.

Trivia question: How many total zones are there in Atlantis no Nazo?
