On This Day: April 1 1987 Solitude Standing by Suzanne Vega Was Released
On this day April 1 1987 Suzanne Vega released her second studio album Solitude Standing. The album featured a refined acoustic pop sound paired with poetic storytelling that helped solidify her as one of the most distinctive voices of the late 80s singer songwriter movement.

Solitude Standing reached number 11 on the US Billboard charts and hit number 1 in Sweden. It included Luka a powerful track that became her biggest hit and brought attention to the topic of domestic abuse through subtle yet emotional lyrics.

The album also featured Tom’s Diner which became even more famous a few years later when it was remixed by DNA and turned into a global hit.

Fun fact: Tom’s Diner is often referred to as the mother of the MP3 because the song was used by developers when testing the compression algorithm for the format.

Trivia question: What song from Solitude Standing was later remixed into a dance hit by the group DNA?
