On this day, November 26, 1986, The Mosquito Coast premiered in theaters. Directed by Peter Weir, the film starred Harrison Ford as Allie Fox, an inventor who uproots his family to live in the jungle, only to face the consequences of his obsession with creating a utopia. The cast also included Helen Mirren, River Phoenix, Conrad Roberts, Andre Gregory, and Martha Plimpton.

Despite its ambitious themes and strong performances, The Mosquito Coast struggled at the box office, earning $14.3 million against its $25 million budget. Over time, however, it has gained appreciation for its thought-provoking exploration of idealism and hubris.
