There’s a growing debate in Hollywood over artificial intelligence and copyright laws, and it’s getting serious. More than 400 actors, musicians and industry professionals including Ben Stiller, Paul McCartney, and Ron Howard have signed an open letter urging Donald Trump to protect their rights from AI.
The concern is and it’s a valid one is that AI technology can now create music, movies and even voices that sound exactly like real artists. Imagine an AI generating a new Beatles song using Paul McCartney’s voice without his permission or a digital version of an actor appearing in a movie without being paid. Many Hollywood professionals believe this is a huge problem because AI could allow companies to profit from creative works without compensating the original artists.
Supporters of stronger copyright protections argue that artificial intelligence should not be able to copy, mimic or recreate an artist’s work without consent. If musicians, writers and actors put their time and talent into creating something AI shouldn’t be allowed to take it and use it for commercial purposes.
On the other side AI developers and tech companies argue that artificial intelligence is simply a tool like an artist taking inspiration from past works. They believe that restricting AI too much could slow innovation and limit its potential for creativity.
As AI continues to evolve the battle between Hollywood and artificial intelligence will only get bigger. Should AI be allowed to use an artist’s voice, music or acting without permission? Or should copyright laws be strengthened to protect creators from AI generated content?
What do you think? Should AI have creative freedom or should artists have stronger legal protection? I side with the artists.
