On this day, November 23, 1988, Hanna’s War premiered in theaters. Directed by Menahem Golan, the film starred Ellen Burstyn, Maruschka Detmers, Anthony Andrews, Donald Pleasence, and David Warner.

Based on the true story of Hannah Senesh, a Hungarian Jewish resistance fighter during World War II, the film depicted her bravery as she parachuted into Nazi-occupied Europe to help save lives. Despite its poignant subject matter and strong performances, Hanna’s War struggled at the box office, earning only $139,000 in the US against a $20 million budget.
