On this day, December 9, 1983, John Carpenter’s Christine premiered in theaters. Based on Stephen King’s novel, this supernatural horror film tells the story of a high schooler who becomes dangerously obsessed with a 1958 Plymouth Fury possessed by malevolent forces.

With a cast featuring Keith Gordon, John Stockwell, Alexandra Paul, and Harry Dean Stanton, Christine combined Carpenter’s signature suspense with King’s gripping storytelling. Made on a $10 million budget, the film grossed $21 million and has since become a cult classic in the horror genre.
