On this day, December 1, 1981, Bret Maverick premiered on NBC, bringing James Garner back to his iconic role as the charming gambler from the original Maverick series of the 1950s and 60s.

The show followed Bret Maverick’s adventures after settling down in the town of Sweetwater, Arizona, where he owns a saloon but continues to find himself involved in schemes, showdowns, and mischief. Despite its nostalgic appeal and Garner’s beloved performance, Bret Maverick lasted just one season with a total of 18 episodes.
