When I’m With You Became the #1 Song in America
On this day, February 4, 1989, When I’m With You by the Canadian arena rock band Sheriff became the #1 song in America. The song, originally released in 1983, saw a surprising resurgence six years later when radio stations began playing it again. Due to its newfound popularity, Capitol Records reissued the single, and it climbed to the top of the Billboard Hot 100, holding the #1 spot from February 4 - 10.

Sheriff had disbanded by the time the song became a hit in 1989, making When I’m With You one of the rare songs to top the charts after a band had already broken up.

Fun fact: The song’s famous high note at the end was performed by lead singer Freddy Curci, who later formed the band Alias, known for their hit More Than Words Can Say.

Trivia question: What was the original release year of When I’m With You before its 1989 reissue?
