On This Day: May 8, 1989 - Phish Releases Debut Album Junta
On May 8, 1989, Phish released their debut album Junta, a self produced collection that captured the band’s early improvisational style and genre bending approach. Named after their first official manager Ben "Junta" Hunter, the album was initially distributed on cassette and became a favorite among their growing grassroots fan base.

Junta featured early versions of tracks like You Enjoy Myself, David Bowie, and Fluffhead that would become staples of Phish’s legendary live shows. The album set the foundation for their rise as one of the most influential jam bands of the modern era.

Fun fact: Junta wasn't officially released on CD until 1992, but its original cassette release helped build one of the most dedicated tape trading communities in music history.
