On this day May 7, 1988, Wishing Well by Terence Trent D’Arby became the number one song in America, topping the Billboard Hot 100 for the week of May 7 through May 13. With its funky rhythm, soulful vocals, and unique production style, the song marked a major breakthrough for D’Arby and helped establish him as one of the most exciting new artists of the decade.

Wishing Well also hit number one in Canada and the Netherlands and became a signature track of late 80s R&B and pop. The song’s success propelled his debut album to platinum status and earned him international acclaim.

Fun fact: Terence Trent D’Arby later changed his name to Sananda Maitreya and continued recording music independently under that identity.
