On This Day: May 3, 1988 - Bruce Hornsby and the Range Release Scenes from the Southside
On May 3, 1988, Bruce Hornsby and the Range released their second studio album Scenes from the Southside. Building on the success of their debut, the album delivered more of the group’s signature blend of rock, jazz, and Americana with thoughtful lyrics and rich instrumentation.

Scenes from the Southside reached number five on the US Billboard charts and included the hit single The Valley Road which became one of the band’s most popular songs. The album further established Bruce Hornsby as a unique voice in late 80s music.

Fun fact: The Valley Road was nominated for a Grammy and featured Hornsby’s distinctive piano style that set him apart from most of his chart competitors at the time.
