On This Day: May 29, 1981 - Dead & Buried Creeps into Theaters
On this day May 29, 1981, the horror film Dead & Buried was released in theaters. Directed by Gary Sherman, the film starred James Farentino, Melody Anderson, Jack Albertson, Dennis Redfield, Nancy Locke, and Robert Englund. Set in a quiet coastal town, the film followed a sheriff who uncovers a chilling mystery involving the townspeople and a series of gruesome murders.

Though it struggled at the box office, earning just over 216 thousand dollars, the film gradually built a cult following over the years for its eerie tone, surprising twists, and practical effects. It was one of the more unsettling and underrated horror entries of the early 1980s.

Fun fact: Dead & Buried featured one of Robert Englund’s early horror roles, just a few years before he became iconic as Freddy Krueger in A Nightmare on Elm Street.
