On this day May 22, 1987, The Chipmunk Adventure premiered in theaters bringing Alvin, Simon and Theodore to the big screen for the first time in their own animated feature. Directed by Janice Karman, the film followed the Chipmunks and the Chipettes as they raced around the world in hot air balloons while unknowingly smuggling diamonds.

Although its budget was never officially disclosed, the film earned 6.8 million dollars at the box office and later developed a loyal following through home video. With catchy musical numbers, exotic locations and fan-favorite characters, the movie became a nostalgic staple for 80s kids.

Fun fact: Ross Bagdasarian Jr. and Janice Karman voiced nearly all the main characters including both the Chipmunks and the Chipettes.
