On this day May 22 1980 Diana Ross released her landmark tenth studio album Diana. Produced by the legendary duo Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards of Chic the album brought Ross into the new decade with a fresh and modern sound that blended disco funk and pop.
The album climbed to number 2 on the Billboard 200 and became an international sensation hitting number 1 in Sweden and charting high across Europe. It featured some of her biggest and most enduring hits including Upside Down and I’m Coming Out both of which became anthems of empowerment and dance culture.
Diana became one of the best selling albums of Ross’s solo career and is often considered one of her finest artistic statements.
Fun fact: Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards originally mixed the album in their signature Chic style but Motown remixed it without their input to match radio formats leading to tensions even as the album became a massive success.
