On this day May 21, 1984, Lee Greenwood released his patriotic anthem God Bless the USA. The powerful ballad quickly became one of the most enduring American songs of the 1980s, resonating deeply with audiences during moments of national pride and remembrance. It reached number 16 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and has since become a staple at political events, sporting games and Independence Day celebrations.

Originally featured on his album You’ve Got a Good Love Comin’, the song would later rise in popularity during the Gulf War, post 9/11, and other national milestones, becoming Greenwood’s signature hit.
