On This Day: May 20, 1988 - Willow Premiered in Theaters
On this day May 20, 1988, the fantasy adventure film Willow premiered in theaters. Directed by Ron Howard and produced by George Lucas, the movie starred Warwick Davis as the brave farmer turned sorcerer and Val Kilmer as the charming and rebellious swordsman Madmartigan. With a budget of 35 million dollars, Willow delivered an ambitious blend of practical effects, magical storytelling and high fantasy adventure.

The film followed Willow Ufgood on his quest to protect a mysterious baby from an evil queen, drawing on classic fantasy themes of good versus evil, destiny and unlikely heroes. Although it received mixed reviews upon release, Willow still earned over 57 million dollars at the box office and built a strong cult following over the years.

Fun fact: Warwick Davis was just 17 years old when he was cast as the lead in Willow, making him one of the youngest actors to headline a major fantasy film at the time.
