On This Day: May 2, 1981 - Morning Train by Sheena Easton Hits Number One
On May 2, 1981, Sheena Easton’s hit Morning Train (9 to 5) reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100. The song’s catchy melody and relatable lyrics quickly captured the attention of audiences across the country.

Morning Train stayed at number one in America from May 2 through May 15. It also topped the charts in Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, making it one of Sheena Easton’s biggest international successes. The song became a defining anthem of early 80s pop and helped launch her long career.

Fun fact: In the United States the song’s title was changed from 9 to 5 to Morning Train to avoid confusion with Dolly Parton’s song 9 to 5 which was released around the same time.
