On This Day: May 19, 1989 - Road House Premiered in Theaters
On this day May 19, 1989, the cult action classic Road House premiered in theaters. Directed by Rowdy Herrington, the film starred Patrick Swayze as Dalton, a mysterious and skilled bouncer hired to clean up the Double Deuce, a rowdy bar in a small Missouri town. The cast also featured Ben Gazzara, Kelly Lynch and Sam Elliott in memorable supporting roles.

Though not a major critical hit at the time of release, Road House became an enduring favorite for its mix of martial arts action, over the top bar fights and Swayze’s charismatic screen presence. The film captured the rugged spirit of late 80s action movies and developed a strong following in the years that followed, especially through home video and cable airings.

It remains one of the most quoted and rewatched action films of the decade.

Fun fact: Kelly Lynch replaced Annette Bening as Doc because she did not have chemistry with Patrick Swayze.
