On This Day: May 19, 1986 - Bananarama Released Their Hit Single Venus
On this day May 19, 1986, Bananarama released their high energy cover of Venus, a track that would become one of the most iconic pop songs of the 80s. Originally a 1969 hit by Shocking Blue, Bananarama’s version infused the track with a dance pop sound that resonated with audiences worldwide.

Produced by the legendary Stock Aitken Waterman team, Venus hit number 1 on the US Billboard charts for the week of September 6 through 12. It also reached number 1 in Canada, Switzerland, Finland, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. The song’s bold production, catchy hooks and vibrant music video made it a staple of both radio and MTV throughout the decade.

Venus became Bananarama’s biggest hit in the United States and helped solidify their place in 80s pop history.

Fun fact: Bananarama became the first all female group to reach number 1 in the US with a remake of a previous number 1 hit by another band.
