On This Day: May 14, 1988 - Final Episode of Second Chance Aired
On this day May 14, 1988, Fox aired the final episode of Second Chance, a short lived sitcom that starred a young Matthew Perry and explored themes of redemption, teenage life and second chances from beyond the grave. The show originally premiered in fall 1987 and was later retooled and renamed Boys Will Be Boys partway through its run in an attempt to boost ratings.

Second Chance began with a unique concept. Kiel Martin played a man named Charles who dies in the year 2011 and is sent back to the past to guide his younger self, portrayed by Matthew Perry, in hopes of correcting his teenage mistakes and earning a second chance at salvation. As the series shifted focus to the antics of the younger characters, the afterlife storyline was dropped and the show continued under the new title Boys Will Be Boys.

Despite an interesting premise and early star power, the series ran for only one season with 21 episodes before being canceled. It remains a notable early role for Matthew Perry, who would go on to find fame years later in Friends.

Fun fact: Second Chance marked Matthew Perry’s first lead television role and was one of the earliest original sitcoms produced by the then new Fox network.
