On this day May 12, 1989, Morbid Angel released their debut album Altars of Madness, a defining moment in the evolution of death metal. Hailing from Florida, Morbid Angel unleashed a sound that was faster, darker and more technically complex than most metal of the era. Altars of Madness would go on to be hailed as one of the most influential and groundbreaking records in extreme metal history.

The album featured aggressive blast beats, intricate guitar solos and guttural vocals that became the blueprint for the genre’s future.
