On this day March 7 1986 the fantasy action film Highlander premiered in theaters. Directed by Russell Mulcahy the movie starred Christopher Lambert as Connor MacLeod an immortal Scottish warrior who must battle others like him to claim the ultimate prize. Sean Connery played his mentor Juan Sánchez-Villalobos Ramírez while Clancy Brown portrayed the ruthless villain Kurgan.

Despite its unique premise blending historical fantasy and modern action Highlander underperformed at the box office earning only 12.9 million against its 19 million budget. However the film gained a massive cult following thanks to its imaginative storyline intense sword fights and a memorable soundtrack featuring music by Queen. Its success on home video led to multiple sequels a TV series and a lasting legacy in pop culture.

Fun fact: Sean Connery filmed all of his scenes in just one week due to scheduling conflicts and was paid 1 million for his role.
