On This Day March 4 1983 - Baby It’s You Premiered in Theaters
On this day March 4 1983 the romantic drama Baby It’s You premiered in theaters. Directed by John Sayles the film starred Rosanna Arquette and Vincent Spano in a coming of age story set in the 1960s.

The film followed Jill a high achieving high school student from an upper middle class background who falls for Sheik a rebellious aspiring singer from the wrong side of town. Their relationship is tested as Jill pursues college ambitions while Sheik struggles to find direction in life. The movie captured themes of young love identity and class differences with a nostalgic soundtrack featuring artists like Bruce Springsteen.

Baby It’s You was made on a budget of three million dollars but only grossed one point eight million at the box office. Despite its financial struggles it received positive reviews for its realistic portrayal of teenage relationships and strong performances from the lead actors.

80s insight: Baby It’s You was the first film directed by John Sayles to be backed by a major studio but he later returned to independent filmmaking where he became known for his unique storytelling style.
