On this day March 31 1987 Prince released his ninth studio album Sign o’ the Times. A double album that showcased his genre blending genius the project explored funk soul pop rock and psychedelia while touching on everything from social issues to love and heartbreak.

The album reached number 6 on the US Billboard charts and hit number 1 in Switzerland. Featuring standout tracks like the title track Sign o’ the Times Housequake If I Was Your Girlfriend and I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man it quickly became one of Prince’s most acclaimed works. Critics praised the album for its innovation and lyrical depth and it’s widely considered one of the greatest albums of the 80s cementing Prince’s reputation as a musical visionary.

Fun fact: Many of the songs on Sign o’ the Times were originally intended for other shelved projects including the abandoned albums Dream Factory and Camille.
