On This Day: March 3 1987 Criminal Minded by Boogie Down Productions Was Released
On this day March 3 1987 Boogie Down Productions released their debut album Criminal Minded. The album is considered one of the most influential hip hop records of all time helping to define hardcore rap and laying the foundation for the gangsta rap movement.

Criminal Minded introduced the world to KRS One and DJ Scott La Rock blending raw lyricism with hard hitting beats. The album featured tracks like South Bronx and The Bridge Is Over which were part of the legendary feud with MC Shan and the Juice Crew. The album’s themes of street life and social awareness made it a groundbreaking release in hip hop history.

Tragically DJ Scott La Rock was killed shortly after the album’s release making Criminal Minded his only full length project with Boogie Down Productions. Despite this loss KRS One continued the group’s legacy and became a key voice in hip hop activism and knowledge based lyricism.

Fun fact: Criminal Minded was one of the first hip hop albums to feature firearms on the cover creating controversy while reinforcing its hardcore street image.

Trivia question: Boogie Down Productions had a major influence on conscious hip hop. Can you name the 1990 album where KRS One shifted toward socially conscious themes?
