On this day March 29 1989 Rain Man took home the Oscar for Best Picture at the 61st Academy Awards held at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles California. The ceremony had no official host and was broadcast live on ABC.

Rain Man was the big winner of the night with 4 Academy Awards including Best Picture Best Director for Barry Levinson Best Actor for Dustin Hoffman and Best Original Screenplay. It also led the nominations with a total of 8 nods. The film’s emotional story about the bond between two brothers struck a chord with audiences and critics alike.

Jodie Foster won Best Actress for her role in The Accused and the ceremony marked a shift in Oscar history as it went without a traditional host.
