On this day March 28 1989 Canadian singer Alannah Myles released her self titled debut album. Blending bluesy rock vocals with polished production the album introduced a powerful new voice to the music world and quickly climbed the charts.

The album reached number 5 on the US Billboard charts and hit number 1 in Canada. It featured the massive hit Black Velvet which became a number 1 single in multiple countries and earned Alannah a Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance. The album also included other standout tracks like Love Is and Still Got This Thing.

Fun fact: Black Velvet was written as a tribute to Elvis Presley and became one of the most iconic songs of the late 80s and early 90s.
