On This Day: March 28 1980 When Time Ran Out Premiered in Theaters
On this day March 28 1980 the disaster film When Time Ran Out premiered in theaters. Directed by James Goldstone the movie starred Paul Newman Jacqueline Bisset and Pat Morita and followed a group of people trapped on a tropical island as a volcano threatens to erupt and destroy everything in its path.

Despite its all star cast and big budget of $20 million the film struggled at the box office bringing in only $3.8 million. It was the last of producer Irwin Allen’s run of disaster movies which included earlier hits like The Towering Inferno and The Poseidon Adventure. When Time Ran Out was packed with action stunts and tense escape scenes but failed to capture the critical or commercial success of its genre predecessors.

Fun fact: The movie received multiple Golden Raspberry Award nominations including Worst Picture and Worst Supporting Actor for Irwin Allen himself.

Trivia question: What previous Paul Newman film directed by Irwin Allen was one of the biggest disaster hits of the 1970s?
