On This Day: March 27 1989 Generations Premiered on NBC
On this day March 27 1989 the groundbreaking daytime soap opera Generations premiered on NBC. The series ran for 2 seasons with a total of 470 episodes and made television history as the first soap opera to center around an African American family from the very beginning.

Generations followed the lives of the Marshall and Whitmore families as they navigated love business and personal struggles across generations. The show featured a talented cast including Vivica A. Fox in one of her earliest major roles along with Joan Pringle and Kristoff St. John. Even though Generations had a relatively short run the show broke new ground for representation in daytime television and is still remembered for its bold step forward in diversity.

Fun fact: Vivica A. Fox got her start on Generations before going on to a major film and television career in the 90s and beyond.

Trivia question: What was the name of the family business owned by the Marshalls in Generations?
