On This Day: March 24 1989 Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Occurred in Alaska
On this day March 24 1989 the Exxon Valdez oil tanker struck a reef in Prince William Sound Alaska and spilled an estimated 240000 barrels of crude oil into the ocean. The spill quickly became one of the worst environmental disasters in US history contaminating over 1300 miles of coastline and killing hundreds of thousands of marine animals and birds.

The disaster drew global attention and raised serious concerns about oil transport safety and environmental protection. Cleanup efforts took years and led to widespread changes in shipping regulations and spill response planning across the United States.

Trivia question: What was the name of the reef that the Exxon Valdez struck causing the massive oil spill?
