On This Day: March 24 1984 The Icicle Works Released Their Debut Album
On this day March 24 1984 British band The Icicle Works released their self titled debut album. Blending post punk and new wave with a touch of psychedelic rock the album introduced American audiences to the band’s atmospheric sound and poetic lyrics. The album included the breakout hit Birds Fly which gained heavy radio play and helped push the album to number 40 on the Billboard charts. With emotional vocals and rich guitar textures The Icicle Works established the group as part of the vibrant alternative rock scene of the 80s.

Fun fact: The full title of the band’s breakout single is Birds Fly Whisper to a Scream but in the US the title was shortened and the original spoken intro was removed for radio airplay.

Trivia question: What UK city did The Icicle Works originate from during the early 80s post punk explosion?
