On This Day: March 23 1984 Racing With the Moon Premiered in Theaters
On this day March 23 1984 Racing With the Moon premiered in theaters. Directed by Richard Benjamin the romantic drama starred Sean Penn Elizabeth McGovern and Nicolas Cage. Set during World War II the film followed two friends spending their last days of freedom before heading off to serve in the military. The film captured the emotions of young love friendship and the uncertainty of wartime. Despite strong performances and a nostalgic atmosphere it struggled at the box office earning just slightly more than its $6.5 million budget. Over the years it has been appreciated for its heartfelt storytelling and early performances from its now well-known cast.

Fun fact: Nicolas Cage and Sean Penn had previously worked together in the 1982 film Fast Times at Ridgemont High though they had minimal interaction on screen.

Trivia question: What 1986 film earned Sean Penn his first major award nomination?
