On this day March 21 1988 Mike Tyson defended his WBA WBC and IBF heavyweight championships by knocking out Tony Tubbs in the second round at the Tokyo Dome. The dominant performance extended Tyson’s undefeated professional record to 34-0 further solidifying his reputation as the most feared boxer in the world.

Tyson’s power and speed overwhelmed Tubbs early in the fight leading to a decisive knockout just over six minutes into the match. This victory was part of Tyson’s legendary reign as undisputed heavyweight champion during the late 80s.

Fun fact: This was Mike Tyson’s first professional fight outside the United States and his only bout in Japan until his famous fight against Buster Douglas in 1990.
