On This Day: March 21 1984 Part of Central Park Was Named Strawberry Fields in Honor of John Lennon
On this day March 21 1984 a section of Central Park in New York City was officially named Strawberry Fields in honor of John Lennon. The 2.5-acre area located near West 72nd Street and Central Park West was dedicated as a peaceful memorial to the legendary Beatles musician who was tragically killed in 1980 outside his nearby home at The Dakota.

Strawberry Fields features the famous Imagine mosaic a tribute to Lennon’s message of peace and love. The site quickly became a gathering place for fans who continue to visit and pay tribute to his life and music. Countries around the world donated trees and plants to the memorial further symbolizing Lennon’s global impact.

Fun fact: The name Strawberry Fields was inspired by the Beatles song Strawberry Fields Forever which was written about a children’s home in Liverpool that Lennon used to visit.

Trivia question: What year was John Lennon posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a solo artist?
