On This Day: March 20 1987 Burglar Premiered in Theaters
On this day March 20 1987 the crime-comedy film Burglar premiered in theaters. Directed by Hugh Wilson the film starred Whoopi Goldberg as a professional thief who gets tangled in a murder investigation. The cast also included Bob Goldthwait G W Bailey and Lesley Ann Warren.

The film followed Goldberg’s character Bernice Rhodenbarr a bookstore owner by day and skilled burglar by night who is forced to solve a murder to clear her name. Blending action comedy and mystery Burglar showcased Goldberg’s sharp comedic timing and ability to lead a film. Despite mixed reviews it was a moderate box office success grossing 16.3 million.

Fun fact: Burglar was based on the book The Burglar in the Closet by Lawrence Block but the character was originally written as a male before being rewritten for Whoopi Goldberg.

Trivia question: What 1990 supernatural film earned Whoopi Goldberg an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress?
