On this day March 2 1985 Madonna released Crazy for You a power ballad that became one of her most successful singles. The song showcased a different side of Madonna’s artistry moving away from her dance pop sound to a more emotional and mature vocal performance.

Crazy for You was recorded for the soundtrack of the film Vision Quest and quickly gained popularity. It reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 from May 11 to May 17 making it Madonna’s second number one hit in the United States. The song also hit number one in Canada and Australia further cementing her status as a global superstar.

The song was a turning point in Madonna’s career proving that she could succeed beyond club and dance music. Crazy for You remained a fan favorite and was later included in several of her greatest hits collections.

80s insight: Crazy for You was almost cut from the Vision Quest soundtrack but the film’s music supervisor fought to keep it recognizing its potential to be a major hit.
