On This Day: March 2 1984 Repo Man Was Released in Theaters
On this day March 2 1984 the cult classic Repo Man was released in theaters. Directed by Alex Cox the film starred Harry Dean Stanton and Emilio Estevez in a bizarre mix of science fiction punk rock and dark comedy.

The story followed Otto a young punk rocker played by Emilio Estevez who gets recruited into the strange world of car repossession by a seasoned repo man played by Harry Dean Stanton. What starts as a gritty job quickly turns into a wild adventure involving government conspiracies alien technology and a mysterious 1964 Chevy Malibu with supernatural powers.

Repo Man was made on a budget of one point five million dollars and grossed three point seven million at the box office. While it was not a major commercial success upon release it developed a strong cult following thanks to its offbeat humor unique style and punk rock soundtrack featuring bands like Iggy Pop Black Flag and Suicidal Tendencies.

Fun fact: The glowing trunk of the mysterious Chevy Malibu was inspired by the suitcase in the 1955 noir film Kiss Me Deadly which also contained an unknown powerful object.
